María Verónica Bastías, GNDR’s Regional Development Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean was chosen by civil society and local governments to deliver a joint declaration statement on behalf of these groups of stakeholders to the High Level Ministerial Meeting in Asunción (Paraguay).
The gathering, organised by the Regional Office for the Americas (UNISDR AM) of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, aimed to discuss the Sendai Framework and define regional priorities for their implementation by individual countries of the Americas.
The agreements and recommendations arising from this meeting were summarised in the Asunción Declaration Guidelines towards a regional action plan on the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the Americas, which will guide Americas nations when developing their own national plans aligned with regional priorities and will serve as the basis for further discussion and analysis with a broader group of partners in early November this year at the 5th Session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2016 (#PR16).
The #PR16 is a multisectoral and broadly participatory forum that reflects the commitment and concern of the (national, subnational and local) governments, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), international organizations (IOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community organizations, scientific and academic institutions, private sector, donors and the media.
It is expected that the amount of space and involvement of civil society will be much higher in November at the #PR16 than at the Asunción High Level Ministerial Meeting.
