YAKKUM Emergency Unit wins prestigious award at COP22

“Gender Just Climate Solutions Award” went to GNDR member YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) from Indonesia, under the 'Non-technical solution' category.

During the global event of COP22 in Marrakech, YEU was invited by the Women and Gender Constituency to receive the prize for “Gender Just Climate Solutions Award”. YEU project won the award in the Non-technical solution category with the project titles “Empowering Women’s Groups in Disaster Prone Areas through Community Based Sustainable Water Management”. The project is financially supported by GNDR and the Huairou Commission. The target area of the project is in the Temanggung District in the Central Java province, where GNDR also contributed through the programme Action at the Frontline (AFL) 2015/2016.

Helga Yohana Simatupang was at the COP22 and received the award on behalf of YEU. The winning project was showcased in page 17 of the Gender Just Climate Solutions Publication that was distributed during the COP22 and its website. The winning project also received EUR 1,000 donated by Women in Europe for Common Future (WECF) to scaling-up the impact in the community and monitoring-evaluation assistance for a year. YEU will have the initial discussion with WECF in January 2017 on the mechanisms and the implementation for scaling up.

  • 1. Technical solutions
    Organization: Fondation Mohammed VI (Morocco)
    Project Title: Women and school children install and use solar cookers to preserve the Argan forest
    Recipient of the award: Pr. Katim Alaoui
  • 2. Transformational solutions
    Organization: Enda Graf Sahel (Senegal)
    Project Title: Strengthening women’s ancestral and artisanal fishery to preserve mangrove natural resources in the Saloum delta
    Recipient of the award: Fatou Ndoye

Anastasia Maylinda from the Sekretariat of YAKKUM Emergency Unit told us "We are really grateful that through combined efforts we can support and assist the communities and grassroots women groups to deal with the issues on how to cope with the hazards and how to tackle the challenges to be more resilient. YEU is looking forward to the continuation of our cooperation in the future".
