Email lists

Registered GNDR members can contact other members through our email lists below (also called listservs). This is a way to ask for information, share knowledge and news, propose collaborations, or simply to say hello!  There are different lists for different purposes. Please read carefully the instructions below to make sure you use the most approriate list for each ocassion.

How Does It Work?

When a list member sends an email to the discussion list's email address that email is automatically copied to everyone on the list. Responses to that email are also copied to the list members, just like a large group discussion. But you can choose if you want your response to be sent to the entire list or to the individual member that sent the original message or reply.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What things can I write about?
You can use them to email every GNDR member in your region to discuss matters, debate issues, share learning or opportunities, ask for help to other members, publicly ask questions or pass information to your regional representatives, raise complaints, etc etc.

How can I email to the entire list?

Simply write an email in the same way you email every day and send it to the global list or your regional list

Can I email only a few people in the list?

No. If you use your regional email list address your message will be received by all people in your region.

How do I know the email address of the individual that sent or replied to the email?

The email address is available at the top of every message.

How can I reply privately to the sender of one of the emails?
If you simply click reply, your message will be received by everyone. To respond privately follow the instructions at the top of every email sent through the email list. In those instructions you will see the email address.

How can I be sure that my email will be private to the sender?
If you're unsure if your response is going to be personal or private, review the email address in the TO: field of your response. If there is an address that ends in @gndr-discussions.org that response will go to the whole list.

Do I need to subscribe?
No. You are automatically subscribed from the moment your registration has been approved by a Secretariat staff as a GNDR Full or Associate member from a particular country/region. If you have received this message, you can use the lists whenever you want.

Can I unsubscribe from my regional list or the global list?
You cannot unsubscribe from your regional list or the list that emails all GNDR members [This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.].

Can I unsubscribe from email lists?
Yes, you can unsubscribe from thematic/event lists created specifically for a purpose. But you cannot unsubscribe from your regional list or the global list.

Can I send attachments?
In total you can send emails of 2MB including attachments and text. Emails bigger than that will be blocked.

How do I know if my email has been delivered to everyone?
By default, you should receive a copy of your own email, same as everybody else in the list.

Is there a list of Best Practice tips to use them in a considerate way?
So far there is no approved policy. But from years of experience and members complaints, we advise the following:

  • Send a new email (instead of replying an existing one) to email about a new topic. Do not recycle previous emails
  • Choose a good descriptive title
  • Write in the language adequate to the list (regional, global, etc)
  • Be concise and clear
  • Sign your email (name, organisation, email address) at the bottom
  • When you reply, think first if your message needs to be read by everybody.
  • Please be considerate. Do not reply to all the list to simply thank the sender, or to tell him/her that you received the message. To do so, reply privately to the sender.
  • If you have other suggestions, please let us know and we will add them to the list.

Can I ask the Secretariat to send a message on my behalf?
If there is a good reason why you cannot send the message yourself, we will try to advice and help. Otherwise, we recommend that you send it yourself. Members respond more enthusiastically and are more helpful to emails from other members. The Secretariat sends many emails, so many members often do not have the time to read them. But they usually read emails if they see they come from another fellow member.

Why cannot I see the emails of everyone in the list?
For legal reasons, we are not allowed to publish the entire list of email addresses of members from one region. This also prevents unscrupulous spammers from collecting your email addresses and use them to spam you.

Why is my email blocked sometimes?
There are many reasons: Typing the email list address incorrectly. Not being part of a regional list. Using banned/forbidden words. Your email been seen as spam by the server. Your email was bigger in total than 2MB (2,000 Kb). Etc. etc.

What can I do if I send an email but I think it has not been delivered to the list?
We are happy to help. Tell us to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Can I email other regions?
No. You can only email your region or all members globally. But be default members do not have permissions to email other regions. If you have a genuine reason to do so, please ask your Regional Development Coordinator (if you have one) or email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to tell us what you need to share.

If you have additional questions, suggestions or feedback, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or simply ...use the email lists!
