GNDR joined a recent CADRI Partnership panel discussion at the Humanitarian Partnerships and Networks Week 2024 (HNPW) in Geneva.

The session, Building Resilience Together: Uniting Efforts for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation with the CADRI Partnership, included panellists from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the World Health Organization (WHO), alongside GNDR.

Representing GNDR, Policy Lead, Dr Andrew Knight highlighted the crucial role of local communities and civil society organisations in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation efforts.

Investing at the local level

For civil society to be at its most effective, it must be properly resourced. We know that direct investment at the local level makes a significant impact, so it is vital that financial support extends beyond national governments and that local government engages with and empowers local communities and civil society organisations. Global funding must reach local communities for effective implementation.

Andrew also emphasised the importance of comprehensive risk management approaches promoted by UNDRR and GNDR, which ensure that everyone – especially those most at risk of disaster – have their voices heard.
