Krisoker Sor is a community based organisation (CBO) based in Bangladesh. It started by supporting farmers and communities in the prevention and reduction of disaster risk in the small coastal community of East Sujonkathi in Bangladesh. Since it's foundation in 2009, Krisoker Sor has implemented innnovative projects in collaboration with varied stakeholders at local, national, regional and global level.
In 17 years, Zakir Hossain the founder, himself a farmer with Krisoker's volunteers supported 700 households in the community. The dedicated team of volunteers disseminates disaster information about risks and disaster response through folk culture, songs and the use of stories and traditional proverbs. It is also experimenting with combination of traditional housing methods and modern building techniques.
“We strongly believe that we are contributing in a real change of mentality”
Krisoker Sor and its sister organisation East Sujonkathi Somaj beginnings have to be found in the aftermath of cyclone Sidr in 2007 that made 4000 casualties when Zakir and volunteers mobilised to support the community of East Sujonkathi deeply affected at the time. The community quickly organised itself to devise and implement a local disaster plan including children and schools in the process. A member of GNDR since 2014, Krisoker believes in the power of local communities and for local action for DRR and development is very important.
