For Mave Bastias, GNDR Regional Development Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean, the experience of being a panel participant in the Action on Disaster Relief (ADR) Forum in San Jose, Costa Rica 5-7 February was a rewarding one - her intervention sparked lots of questions and positive feedback from the mostly private sector audience.

One of the aims of the ADR is to set the foundations to create long-lasting partnerships between public and private sector leaders in their work to reduce the impact of disasters and respond to them in the most effective way.

For this 4th edition of the Action on Disaster Relief Forum, preparedness, risk reduction, disaster relief and recovery were key issues on the agenda, debated in open discussions, panels and Q&A sessions. Celebrated in Costa Rica, it was only natural that the ADR 2019 Forum should be particularly focused on the Caribbean region.

The panel Mave participated in was set out to discuss and analyse regional trends and areas of improvement necessary for advancing a resilience agenda, in particular challenges and opportunities in reducing vulnerability and exposure. Mave participated in the panel representing civil society organisations.

Chaired by the Capability Director of General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada, Tony White, other experts in the panel were Luke Schiel, Senior Manager for Disaster Response of Clinton Foundation and Monica Ramirez, Housing & Human Settlements Director of Habitat for Humanity International.

Mave spoke to an audience mostly made up of representatives from the private sector, but also some intergovernmental bodies and military corps focused on emergency.

Mave’s intervention showed that resilience at local level is a key issue for all stakeholders, from governments to private sector and civil society.

The intervention prompted a series of questions from the audience, and interest from the likes of Clinton Foundation and Global Giving during the course of the conference.

How to strengthen the relationship with civil society and intergovernmental bodies - and how to build a strategy to approach private sector - still remain important questions that need focus and priority after the end of this conference.

As for GNDR, Mave would like to see the network being a recognised partner for strengthening community resilience in the Caribbean region.
