Key findings and conclusions at the national level

  • The threats and risks faced by communities most at risk need to be included and prioritised in national level policies and plans
  • Community level risk reduction activities need to be institutionalised and applied in practise
  • Community engagement while undertaking assessment, planning, implementation and monitoring of risk reduction plans and activities needs to adopted in practise

Surveys undertaken in Chile

Our Views from the Frontline surveys in Chile were undertaken in 2019.

Who was surveyed?

We surveyed 1,118 random households, 47 civil society organisations, 37 local government representatives, and undertook 15 community consultations.

Risk locations prioritised

We prioritised three risk areas:

  • Valparaíso
  • Puchuncaví
  • Saavedra

Communities surveyed

We surveyed people from 15 communities: UV 026, UV 076, UV 070, UV 093, UV 051, Las Ventanas, Puchuncaví, Campiche, Maitencillo, Los Maquis, Puerto Dominguez, Puerto Saavedra, Isla Wapi, Puaucho, and Antinao Carmona & Pehuenche Neculpán

Our impact

Activities undertaken in response to community-level findings and conclusions

  • Information campaigns that allow the community to be learn about disasters and fire prevention
  • Provision of professional equipment that allows residents to prevent and act when a fire occurs
  • Prioritisation of disaster and climate issues during community action plan development, in order to raise awareness of the role of communities in resilience building
  • Installation of rubbish bins and fire-fighting signage, along with environmental and disaster risk education sessions
  • Ecosystem protection through reforestation using native species, and encouraging community organic gardens
  • Delivering awareness campaigns around recycling

Impact of activities

  • Inclusion of communities as stakeholders in the assessment, planning, implementation and monitoring of risk reduction plans and activities for flood and disaster management
  • Community resilience has increased since developing collaborative activities for disaster risk reduction, and promoting a healthy and self-sustaining lifestyle
  • An increase in community knowledge about disaster threats present in the region
  • Collaborative work and consensus building will increase community cohesion
