Who can join?
Membership is free and open to all civil society organisations around the world.
Member organisations
As a global network we offer two ways to join: as a member organisation and as an individual associate.
First and foremost we are a global network of civil society organisations. Becoming a member organisation of GNDR is free and enables your staff to access a range of benefits. The only requirements are that your organisation is a civil society organisation, is active, and willing to engage with and support the delivery of our network strategy. We follow the UN definition of CSOs.
Examples of organisations that can apply for membership:
- International and national non-governmental organisations (INGOs/NGOs)
- Networks, coalitions, platforms and associations
- Community-based and faith-based organisations (including those without constitutions, boards or formally registered)
- Indigenous organisations
- Organisations focused on climate change, food and water security or other drivers of risk
- Women’s organisations, age-inclusive organisations, disability-inclusive organisations
- Independent think tanks or resource centres
- Associations of socio-economically marginalised groups
- Trade unions
- Volunteering organisations
- Many other forms of association of civil society
Once an organisation becomes a member of GNDR we encourage the main contact person to ask colleagues within their organisation to simply register their individual details with us.
We will link all individuals to the relevant member organisation and they can then access all the network benefits and opportunities.
Applying for membership is easy. Eligible organisations just need to complete our online application form and upload a couple of documents that confirm the organisation they work for.
If your organisation is already a GNDR member you can simply register yourself as an individual. We will then link you to your organisation and you can access all benefits.
JOIN GNDRApplication process
Organisations that apply for membership will be asked to send the following documents as part of the application process:
- Legal incorporation as a civil society organisation in their country (as evidence that their organisation exists)
- Signed authority form (available to download) by the executive director or chair; this will give evidence that they have organisational endorsement to join our network
Documentation will be reviewed by the GNDR Secretariat. The application will also be checked against anti-terrorism databases, in line with our donor requirements. Once approved, the organisation will be notified, added to our databases and exclusive member website (the Community Platform).
In some instances civil society organisations without legal registration in their country will still be able to apply for membership. These organisations will need to provide:
- A signed authority form (available to download) by the executive director, chair or another person of authority in the organisation
- Justification to our membership working group outlining the reasons why the organisation is not formally or legally registered
- Evidence that the organisation exists and is currently operating (eg by providing annual reports and/or website links)
- A letter of endorsement from the GNDR national focal point or other member organisation in your country
Once the above information is provided, the GNDR Secretariat will confirm endorsement from our national focal point in the relevant country. The application and supporting documents will go to our membership working group to review. A final decision will be taken by our Global Board.
Individual associates
Individuals who do not work for civil society organisations, but are engaged in disaster risk reduction can apply to become individual associates of GNDR. For example, if you work for a government department or local authority, UN agency, university or private sector company.
Associates get all of the benefits outlined above. However, occasionally some opportunities with limited places or activities designed for organisations rather than individuals may only be available to member organisations (and their staff).
