New annual impact report published

Today GNDR has published its new annual report for 2020/21.

The publication provides an engaging overview of the impact of the network in the first year of our new member-led strategy.

2020/21 was a challenging year with Covid-19, but digital technology enabled us to connect and collaborate with more members, partners and donors. Our network has now grown to 1,655 member organisations in 129 countries.

Our impact at a glance

• 75% of members say GNDR has enhanced their organisation’s ability to collaborate
• 82% of members believe they have a better understanding of how to contribute towards localisation
• 73% of members agree that GNDR has improved their organisation’s ability to implement risk-informed development

Achieving our strategic goals

We have strengthened the collaboration, solidarity and mobilisation of civil society organisations through regional advisory groups and national coordination meetings. Following our digital global summit in 2020, 76% of participants said they learnt new skills, knowledge, ideas and approaches that they can take forward in their work.

We championed a localisation movement by working with 694 at-risk communities across 49 countries to develop local-level resilience plans as part of our Views from the Frontline project. Each plan identifies key activities that should be undertaken, by whom, and the resources needed. The process is a step towards localisation: communities take their own decisions on the actions that help them to reduce the risks they face.

In our Community-based Disaster Risk Management project, partners across Asia, Africa and Latin America engaged directly with national and local government authorities in 2020/21 to build political commitment and accountability to communities most at risk.

Our new Making Displacement Safer project got underway in 2021 with 4,600 displaced people in 11 countries interviewed about their experiences.  The collated research will be used to inform and create innovative solutions to build resilience amongst displaced people.

In our advocacy work this year we raised awareness on the importance of resilience approaches to tackle Covid-19. We worked with local actors to get a full understanding of the consequences of the pandemic on communities, and looked at response measures that build back better and increase prevention in the future. 

We also organised various webinars, including at the High Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development, the London Climate Week and a preparatory event for the 2021 Food Systems Summit.

Stories from members

This year’s annual report features three inspiring stories from the work of GNDR members working directly with communities most at risk of disasters. 

In the Philippines, A2D Project has played a leading role in developing and facilitating the Cebu disability-inclusive disaster risk reduction network. 

In Brazil, GNDR member Rodrigo Dalmeida talks about his work with a community in Rio de Janeiro that has taken action to reduce the impact of floods. 

And in Malawi, Tambuzgani Msiska and Allan Mhlanzi from Plan International Malawi have worked directly with farmers to reduce risks associated with flooding.
