The National Advocacy Network for Disaster Risk Reduction (Réseau MARP Burkina) held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, a validation workshop on Friday 11th September to establish a pact on disaster risk reduction. The pact was submitted to all presidential candidates on 11th October and advocates for the integration of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) as a priority in their sustainable development programmes.

The aim pursued by Réseau MARP Burkina (National Advocacy Network for Disaster Risk Reduction) with this pact was to challenge the candidates for next presidential election to make DRR one of the priorities of their programmes. The network intended to submit to the various candidates to the "Palace of Kosyam" a pact on DRR. The pact aims to contribute to reducing disaster risk in Burkina Faso from 2016 to 2020. To do this, the network brought together in Ouagadougou thirty civil society organizations during a workshop of Validation of the Covenant.

According to these organizations, the state loses considerable resources through disasters in the country that jeopardize the activities and lives of many people. In addition, these are large sums of money are disbursed as emergency relief. For example, for floods of September 1st 2009, over 18 billion francs were mobilized for this purpose. Yet, Réseau MARP Burkina estimates that situations like this could be avoided. That is why it wants to raise the attention of future authorities of the country through this pact. After the elections of 11 October, the network plans to campaign on parliamentarians and later on local elected officials. Réseau MARP Burkina begun this process in 2010 through the training and retraining of actors. The pact brings together thirty CSOs including ATAD, the ODE, and Réseau MARP Burkina, and it is financially supported by Christian AID and Diakonia.
