Chiragh Educational Welfare Society (CEWS) launched the “Flood Emergency Relief Fund” in response to the devastating floods of 2022 in Pakistan, which hit Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province the hardest. The torrential rains, 5.1 times higher than the 30-year average, affected 360,000 people, resulting in 336 deaths and 186 injuries.
The project focused on providing crucial support to communities affected by the floods. CEWS distributed ration packages and essential household items to 1,000 families, ensuring they had basic necessities. They also set up medical camps to tackle health issues, offering much-needed care to those in need.
The impact of the project was significant, easing the suffering of vulnerable families and giving them hope. By addressing their immediate needs and health concerns, CEWS helped these families start the journey of rebuilding their lives. Their quick response showed their dedication to disaster relief and community support.
The photos capture the heart of their humanitarian efforts, showing CEWS volunteers distributing relief packages to flood-hit families in Balochistan. These images highlight the resilience and solidarity that defined their response.
Through this project, CEWS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting marginalised communities and mitigating the effects of disasters.
From awareness to action, young people lead the way in pushing for climate and disaster resilience. This story and photograph is a part of our celebration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2024. Members from across our network have shared their stories of youth-led or focussed resilience work. It demonstrates that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the changemakers today, driving forward local actions that build resilience to disasters and reduce risk.
