The Prima Gadung Youth Group is the driving force behind the Community-led Innovation Partnership (CLIP) – IDEAKSI (Idea, Innovation, Action, and Inclusion). This initiative develops innovative and inclusive disaster response solutions, focusing on at-risk groups like people with disabilities and older people. Supported by Elrha, Start Network, and ADRRN Tokyo Innovation Hub, and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), CLIP fosters community resilience through local innovation.
One of their standout projects is Java Bamboo Earth Sewing, a collaboration between the Prima Gadung Youth Group, environmental communities, and residents of Nganjir Subvillage in Gunungkidul Regency. As part of this initiative, Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is planted in four landslide-prone areas to mitigate the risk of landslides. This natural solution helps protect the community from future disasters while promoting sustainable environmental practices.
What makes this initiative particularly powerful is its inclusive approach, actively engaging women, older people, and individuals with disabilities in disaster risk reduction efforts. By placing youth at the heart of these projects, the Prima Gadung Youth Group is fostering community resilience and empowering the next generation to take the lead in building safer, more inclusive futures. Their work not only strengthens local capacities but also ensures that everyone has a voice in shaping disaster response strategies that protect and uplift their communities.
From awareness to action, young people lead the way in pushing for climate and disaster resilience. This story and photograph is a part of our celebration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2024. Members from across our network have shared their stories of youth-led or focussed resilience work. It demonstrates that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the changemakers today, driving forward local actions that build resilience to disasters and reduce risk.
